Liposuction or suction-assisted lipectomy is the removal of fat from the body with the use of a suction or vacuum-like instrument. The traditional method of liposuction involves inserting flexible tubes known as “cannula” into incisions made in the part of the body to be treated. Fat is transported out of the body through these tubes.

A new enhanced method of liposuction is tumescent liposuction where anesthetic liquid is injected on the part of the body where fat is to be removed causing the fat to become “tumescent” or swollen and firm to ease the movement of the cannula tube. This method reduces post-surgery pain, swelling and bruising.

The other improved method is ultrasonic liposuction, where ultrasonic sounds break down and dissolves fat cells making it easier to suction out. It is very helpful in removing large fat deposits or fat from fibrous areas.

of the body that refuse to shed fat despite dieting and exercising. The hips, waist, thighs, upper arms, buttocks, back, legs, including the face and neck are body areas that are usually treated using this procedure.

It is usually a same-day procedure where the patient is not required to stay at the hospital over night but it can also be an inpatient procedure for treatment of large areas.

Only experienced doctors who have received special training in this surgical procedure should perform liposuction. It should be done in a doctor’s clinic, surgery center or hospital with complete and proper equipment for such surgery. Reduce risks of complications by scheduling liposuction separate from other cosmetic surgeries you are planning to get.

Typically, after liposuction the treated area will be swollen, bruised, sore or numb. To reduce these particular side effects, special compression garments such as stretchable bandages, support hose or girdles are wrapped securely around the treated area. The patient may have to keep the garments on for several weeks.

Other common side effects of liposuction are loose or wrinkly skin. Depending on the skin elasticity, it may take a couple of months or so for the skin to firm up. The part of the body where the tubes were inserted may also be temporarily irritated.

Usually, most liposuction patients are up and about shortly after the procedure. Normal functioning like going to work may take a few days or weeks, depending on the patient or the extent of the surgery.

How effective is liposuction?

Liposuction is proven to eliminate excessive or stubborn fat deposits effectively especially in small areas of the body. The results may be completely noticeable only after quite a few months.

It is important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment. Liposuction does not remove fat or lessen weight permanently. Without regular exercise
